The Circus

The Circus

Nigel West

Nigel West

Epub (my comversion)M15 Operations 1945-1972The history of this book is as exciting as its subject. The High Court Justice of Great Britian issued an injunction against its publication. The officers of MI5 acted in concert against it. But as had been the case with Soviet moles deep in their own apparatus--Burgess, MacLean, Philby, Blunt--it was too little, too late. The American publishers had spirited a copy to New York. Nigel West details the failures of British Intelligence to detect Soviet spies in its own ranks, a failure he contends continues to this day. Case by case, THE CIRCUS shows how post-war intelligence services were riddled by spies who compromised Western secrets, gave the Soviets advantages worth billions of dollars and years of time, and contributed markedly to the West's problems of defense.

From New York to Los Angeles, kill squads were murdering career criminals and psychopathic killers. The public welcomed these "executions" of rapists and murderers whom the courts had failed to imprison. Silencing critics with death, the death squads blew away outspoken media stars, Black nationalists, Communist agitators... all int he guise of law and order. But the truth was that the squads were working for the enemies of America. Democracy had ruptured, spilling out chaos. The president responded with his own squad of death-dealing hotshots — Mack Bolan's Able Team!

Last Gasp

Last Gasp

Trevor Hoyle

Trevor Hoyle

A large, dense, frightening novel from the UK author of This Sentient Earth. In 1990 the ocean's oxygen-producing plankton are dying from pollution. Maverick oceanographer Theo Detrick predicts a disastrous drop in the air's oxygen content within 20 years. Nobody believes him. Polluter-industrialist J.E. Gelstrom is furiously empire-building. The US/USSR military have abandoned nuclear weapons for a better deterrent--environmental warfare. Marine biologist Gavin Chase teams up with Detrick's daughter Cheryl to gather facts & alert the public. The climate warms, the protective ozone layer thins, equatorial regions become uninhabitable. The military, led by maniacal Major Madden, unleashes environmental weapons while retreating to secret, sealed labs to breed mutants able to survive anaerobic conditions. Eventually the dying Gelstrom has a change of heart & gives funds to Chase & friends who work desperately to reverse the ecological transformation. Hoyle's ear for American dialog is nonexistent. His narration is sluggish, weighed down by self-conscious message-mongering. But the apocalyptic premise here is plausible. In the final 100 pages his morbid imagination propels matters to a tensely absorbing conclusion.--Kirkus (edited)

His relentless pursuit through the ruined cities of the west unites him with the civilians of the Resistance forces. They become his recruits for a revolutionary army dedicated to rebuilding America. The Glass Highway

The Glass Highway

Television newscaster Sandy Broderick seems to be the type of guy who has it all: good looks, good hair, a deep voice, and great ratings. Unfortunately, he's also got a son who, more often than not, tends to find himself in the sort of trouble that only someone like private eye Amos Walker can fix. Walker takes the case, with two objectives: find Bud before all the drugs and women make for a fatal combination; and keep Bud's actions from ruining Broderick's sterling reputation. What Walker finds, though, is more than he bargained for -- in a case that tests this terrific P.I. to his very limits.Review"Estleman's intriguing, frequently malignant or low-life characters are richly drawn, truly three-dimensional. Mystery aficionados compare his prose to Ross Macdonald's and Raymond Chandler's. As a Macdonald fan, I can testify this writer does that master one better".-- FORBES From the Inside FlapThe Bookcassette® format is a special recording technique developed as a means of condensing the full, unabridged audio text of a book to record it on fewer tapes. Pitch Dark

Pitch Dark

Renata Adler

Renata Adler

“What’s new. What else. What next. What’s happened here.”Pitch Dark is a book about love. Kate Ennis is poised at a critical moment in an affair with a married man. The complications and contradictions pursue her from a house in rural Connecticut to a brownstone apartment in New York City, to a small island off the coast of Washington, to a pitch black night in backcountry Ireland. Composed in the style of Renata Adler’s celebrated novel Speedboat and displaying her keen journalist’s eye and mastery of language, both simple and sublime, Pitch Dark is a bold and astonishing work of art. From BookforumPitch Dark is murky—not in a turgid sense, but clouded, rather, by troubled reflections, ambivalence, regrets. The weather of Pitch Dark is chilly. Secondary figures are fraught with shadowed histories. Incidents and asides illustrate a hapless, estranging condition of things. —Gary Indiana Review“Intense. . . brilliant. . . A mood, dark and sinister, grows steadily and a tight kind of suspense is created. . . For those who would like to know where fiction is headed, it’s somewhere in this aggressive, provocative direction.”—*People*“Two things hold Pitch Dark together and give it speed and magic. The first is Miss Adler’s gift for language and observation. . . and the second is her willingness to write candidly, even rawly, about emotions.”—Michiko Kakutani, *The New York Times*“Nobody in this country writes better prose than Renata Adler's.”—John Leonard, *Harper's*From the Trade Paperback edition.

Percival Everett

Percival Everett

Suder, Percival Everett's acclaimed first novel, follows the exploits and ordeals of Craig Suder, a struggling black third baseman for the Seattle Mariners. In the midst of a humiliating career slump and difficulties with his demanding wife and troubled son, Suder packs up his saxophone, phonograph, and Charlie Parker's Ornithology and begins a personal crusade for independence, freedom, and contentment. This ambitious quest takes Suder on a series of madcap adventures involving cocaine smugglers, an elephant named Renoir, and a young runaway, but the journey also forces him to reflect on bygone times. Deftly alternating between the past and the present, Everett tenderly reveals the rural South of Suder's childhood -- the withdrawn father; the unhinged, protective mother; the detached, lustful brother; and the jazz pianist who teaches Suder to take chances. And risk it all he finally does: Suder's travels culminate in the fulfillment of his most fanciful childhood dream.LSU Press
