  Prologue

Norr, a king of the gods, came from the Boreal ice and created all the lands that made Amor. He had six sons that made up the kings of the six provinces. They sat together as the Pantheon of the Gods. This is the legend, but it is a complete work of fiction.

Norr was a king, but not a god, and his wife was Anora, a woman from beyond the desert in the east. Norr came from beyond the desert, but little is written about his origins. Anora had incredible powers to move the continents by raising soil from the ocean. Using this power, she created all of Amor. The world before existed only to the east of the Mirror Mountains, and Amor was nothing but ocean.

Amor was not created in a single motion and Anora’s husband Norr played an important role. The name Amor came from a composite bastardization of their names. Together, they created great harmony in the world they made.

Norr had four brothers and two sisters. They made up the rulers of the provinces and as soon as one died, the others would push to absorb their lands. It was slow at first, and then the wars became longer. The cousins and children of the original kings would become more bloodthirsty and even more desperate.

The wars claimed all the harmony that Anora created. When Norr died, she fled to an island to the south. There she had her only child, Elnora. The gift of her mother had survived through her. The children of the elementals would continue through the centuries as the continent was in a never-ending war. The power of the Queens and Kings of Elnora kept their secrets and protected them.

The conflict on the continent led the provincial historians to craft godhood for Norr’s siblings, ignoring him completely. It was not until years later that Norr was added to the Pantheon of The Seven Saints. Beyond the Kingdom of Elnora, Anora was largely forgotten.

This story is best told from oral legend. Two thousand years of truth lies beyond the endless desert and the mirror mountains.

  Chapter 1

The sun had never been so bright in the sky. It had been two days since the gala and Lucien had left shortly after. Kate missed Lucien more than anything, and thinking of him made her feel love all around her.

The sky was light blue and autumn was upon the province. The Free Marshes was a desolate place in winter, so they had already spent the last month storing extra wood. A cold dry wind blew to the east and the leaves had changed to a speckled orange and red.

Kate was hunting alone for the first time, east of the city. Lucien had shown her there were good spots for game, but today the boar rooting location was empty. It was fine, because being out alone somewhere she had never been was exhilarating. There was so much she could do now that the king had given her the rights to hunt in Dulimore and Westfall.

Kate had never been to Westfall but she looked forward to visiting. It would have to wait since Lucien would not be back for a week. There were some issues with the army- rumors of forces east of Dulimore, and of course his father, King Delvin.

King Delvin by now had heard about the two of them, and Lucien would have to receive his approval if they were to be matched. It made her nervous thinking about being a queen. There had not been one in Elnora for several decades, and there would be no queen mother to train her. That was a relief, but at the same time she never felt pretty enough to be a princess, let alone a queen.

The responsibility made Kate anxious and queasy. The people always looked to their leaders, and the prosperity of Elnora was definitely going to make it hard for her to fit in. They had luxuries while she was used to only the most basic things in life. She could imagine wearing hunting gear and the local nobility turning their noses at her. She would be on the outside looking in for the rest of her life. Her head spun just thinking of how it would affect Lucien.

Kate was finally on the east road. It was mid-day, and she felt she had better go back to the city. Viola had talked about spending some time together. Edwin being gone had made her bored. It could be fun for them.

Kate knew how it felt to be bored and lonely. Lucien had kept her so occupied for the last few weeks that she hardly knew what to do with herself. The company would be good for her. Hopefully Viola wouldn’t talk of just Edwin, though. That would not be pleasant and the two of them gushing on each other was stomach-churning enough.

The walls of Dawnbridge rose into view now as Kate approached. The guards at the east gate had gotten used to seeing her the last couple of days and they passed her through with just a wave. The news of her being the hero left people with mixed feelings.

Some of the province thought it was good news that finally women were recognized, and the rest could only gossip about her attire. Kate figured at least none of them wanted her to be kicked out of the court. This was a positive outcome, considering there were no women of prominence in the king’s court, not that he had much of one. Kate grimaced at the thought of their poverty; it was a wonder Lucien was oblivious to it. She was grateful that the castle guard seemed to give her more respect, and some referred to her as the huntsman or hunter.

The best part of it was that people did not notice her much anymore, now that all the information was out. They knew she was at least very good friends with Crown Prince Lucien, even if that wasn’t formal, and they knew her father worked as chancellor for the king, in an official capacity.

Kate had now made it to her home near the gate, the adviser’s house. She would drop off her cloak, bow, quiver, and spear to be a little lighter, then see what Viola was doing. She could imagine her sitting and staring at the crumbling mortar in the castle walls as she waited for the visit.

Kate hoped Viola would be in a mood to maybe walk around the city. There had to be some spots that were interesting.

The stairwell north of the adviser’s house took her up to the main manor. Kate felt warm all over as she passed the room where Lucien stayed. The last time she was there, she spent the night in an embrace with him. It made her arms break out in gooseflesh at just the thought of their bodies entwined.

The corridor in the manor was a long walk to the hallway by the throne room. Once there, she just needed to take the adjacent hallway and up a spiral staircase to the royal quarters. The guard there could barely look her in the eye after the fiasco with her threatening to kill Viola, not to mention Edwin’s naked bottom. It was best to make a quick move to avoid any questions. Kate lowered her head and the guard pretended not to see her.

Viola’s door was open, so Kate just knocked on the frame.

“Hello, your highness.” Kate said, and bowed slightly to be proper.

“Kate, thank the gods you are here. I am bored out of my mind.” Viola stood up abruptly from her desk.

“Well, I just came from a hunt east, so I wanted to check and see if you were planning anything interesting.”

Viola giggled with excitement. “Gods, what I wouldn’t give for a hunt! If I leave this room I have Arnold following me like a shadow. I am going mad in this castle. You have to help me escape.”

Kate rolled her eyes and sighed. “Well, we could go hunting, but I am sure that Arnold would make it difficult for us to have much fun. He is rather imposing.”

“Yes, that, I agree. I will have to sneak out.” Viola tapped her finger to her pursed lips and narrowed her eyes in thought.

Kate was already getting anxious thinking of the two of them deliberately trying to avoid Arnold, and not telling anyone what they are doing.

“Tonight, I will sneak out my window. I will use the sill on the outside to steal around to the garden on the north side of the manor. There is a tree, I think I can climb down into the courtyard. You can meet me there,” Viola said, her voice quick and decisive.

“No. No, absolutely not,” Kate said, underscoring her refusal by holding her hands up and shaking her head.

Viola held her hands together as if in prayer. “Please, Kate. I would do anything for you. I will owe you something special if you agree. How am I supposed to survive in this room while Edwin is gone? I cannot bear the monotony.”

Kate crossed her arms in mock-haughtiness. “Well, you knew that

your escapades with Edwin would get you into trouble,” she lectured.

Viola turned her head to the side and raised her chin. “Humph! Edwin and I were together just a few times in my bed, and I am still as pure as the day he met me.”

Kate struggled to keep from laughing. “You can’t possibly think I would believe that. I saw him completely naked in your bed.”

Viola waved her hand with a huff. “Kate, there are more ways to pleasure a man than with just your body. You should learn that soon. You have to know a ruffian like Lucien will need encouragement not to stray.”

Kate covered her ears. “Gods, no, I do not want to think about how you are keeping Edwin from wandering, or what you do in your bed.”

Viola grabbed Kate’s arms and pulled her hands away from her ears. “You have to help me. If you don’t, I will go alone. How could you live with yourself if I were to be hurt?”

Kate sighed and grumbled, “What would we do, even if you could get out? They would find us in a day or less. There is no point in trying to get free only to be locked down even tighter after they capture you.” Kate could not hide her excitement about the trip, no matter how hard she pretended to not want to go.

Viola turned away from Kate. “I don’t care. A day free of this place is worth a month of imprisonment.”

“You might be imprisoned in the dungeon if the king even thinks you are doing impure things. Anyway, where would we go?”

“Well, there is an estate just near the mountain. We could hike there, and maybe even go to South Pier. We could even smuggle aboard a ship to Elnora, like bandits.”

“Gods, you are mad. The Elnorans are hyper-reclusive. I have never even heard of anyone going to the island. If we were found out they might just throw us off the boat mid-trip.”

Viola turned back to face Kate, her arms folded over her chest. “Where is your sense of adventure?”

Kate motioned to her stomach and grimaced. “I have three nice wounds on my stomach that account for all the adventure I can handle. If we go west, we can hike to the estate. It’s a long trip, though. Can you stand camping through the night?”

“We can stay at your old home in Galebridge. Do you still have anything there? Did you have boys there, Kate, who could give me juicy Kate stories?”

“That is an incredibly bad idea. I have my camp there, but I am not sure about the two of us staying in any camp, let alone near the village. The people there are awful.”

The boys from the village attacking her entered Kate’s mind, in addition to the bandit attack at Tallin. It was pretty scary after those incidents to stay there. Maybe she was just becoming more cautious, but she could tell Viola was desperate. Still, it could be fun. “Well, we could make my camp, but the estate is a long walk. It might take us all day to reach it. You are sure we can stay there?”

Viola nodded. “Sure, it is abandoned.”

Kate could only rub her head in worry. This is a very bad idea. “Viola, are you sure about this? I can travel and hunt, but you could get into trouble, and I am not sure it’s safe.”

“I will meet you in the courtyard after sundown,” Viola screeched.

“All right. I need to rest up, then, and tell my father I am going hunting west for a day or so. I will be careful to omit that you’re coming.”

As Kate was leaving she looked back at Viola. “Don’t be late, I won’t wait forever. I don’t want someone to see me there any more than you do.”

Kate walked past the guard and down the spiral staircase. It was a foolish thing they were doing. It was a thrill, and the idea of it was something Lucien might come up with. As she thought that, she wondered what he was doing right now. I hope he thinks about me when we’re apart. I think about him all the time.

Kate made the journey back to the adviser’s house, although she thought of it as the chancellor’s home. The quill and book on the shingle hanging by the door identified it as a scribe’s shop also.

Kate went inside, where her father sat at the counter in the shop area, working on some papers.

“Hello, Kate. How was the hunt?” Brian asked, barely looking up from his papers.

“It was nice to get out in the open air. It is autumn and the trees are almost completely changed, but I didn’t have much luck.”

“Humph, I’ll bet. Your head was in the clouds, thinking of that scoundrel Lucien,” Brian chided.

“You mean his highness, Crown Prince Lucien. Don’t forget, you are chancellor now. It would be a diplomatic slight to insult him,” Kate lectured, trying – and failing – to sound serious.

“May they lock me in the stock, but I breathe easier now that the scoundrel is far to the south. The trouble in Dulimore will no doubt bring him back, I am certain of it,” Brian said with a smile.

Kate looked at him, curious. “Lucien, when…what have you heard?”

“Kate, you sound too eager. You won’t catch a man by being desperate,” her father said glibly.

Kate crossed her arms and cocked her head to the side. “You were just teasing me?”

“No, he will return. The Elnoran army is in Porin now. The port is teeming with Elnoran knights. They plan to hold the fort and send a message to Elgin if he makes a move into Dulimore.”

“That must mean Alaric is there. Do you know of Edwin? Did he join the army?”

Brian tapped his quill into some ink, continuing to write as they talked. “No, he is with Lucien in the south. They will be there soon enough. It is a day from Elnora to Porin, so if they want, they can get there anytime. I suspect the king is giving them a scolding for their recent behavior.”

“I hope it isn’t too bad,” Kate said, and frowned. Lucien and Edwin had made some trouble, and it was worrying what punishment the king might have for them.

  Chapter 2

The red ring of Lucien’s eye expanded as he focused on a bead of sweat making its way slowly down Edwin’s forehead.

“I...I…I...I assure you, my lord, my...your majesty, that these, or these...the rumors, or rather...Brian simply misinterpreted what he saw in the bedroom. You see, my, I had a flower. I happened to drop it on the floor, and in bending down to pick it up, my trousers fell as I was…I was adjusting them...beforehand,” Edwin stammered, shifting his weight from foot to foot, glancing from Edwin to King Delvin.

“Are you an idiot?” King Delvin asked, as he stood in front of Edwin.

“No, no, your majesty...I simply...rather pointing out...some factual...or possibly factual inconsistencies that might exist in Brian’s version of events.”

“Edwin, you were caught with your pants down in Viola’s bedroom. There is no factual inconsistency other than your intelligence. What is inconsistent is that you can speak, but are so stupid.”

  “I...”

“You know, Edwin, King Elias and I had a nice conversation on capital punishment. He is of the mind we should return to more firm punishments. I don’t know, let us say…castration.”

Edwin looked to Lucien, his face covered in diamonds of perspiration as he mouthed, help me.

“I agree, castration it should be, my lord. It’s just...if she were to be with child…It might be a bigger mess if you were to castrate him now, you see. Perhaps give it a few months to see if her belly grows. We can certainly castrate him anytime, really,” Lucien said, waving his hand demonstrably about.

“Don’t help me anymore,” Edwin whispered to Lucien.

“Lucien, I will get to you soon enough. Edwin, your father wishes to have you stripped of your status, your army commission, and sequester you to the vineyard. He happened to mention this at the same time he said it might be a good idea to send a diplomat to negotiate with King Elias. He is known to be a reasonable man, and that you are not the worst match for Princess Viola. You and your father are very similar: you both talk out both sides of your mouth.”

Edwin nodded quickly. “Very prudent, my father.”

“Lucien,” the king said, and struggled for composure as his jaw tightened.

“My lord,” Lucien replied, a devious grin on his face.

King Delvin paced around the two of them with his hands behind his back. He seemed to be searching for something on the floor as he went around and around many times.
