Bone Valley

Gilbert King

Nonfiction / History / Biography

From Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King comes a chilling exploration of one of America's most haunting wrongful conviction cases. Based on the hit podcast, Bone Valley dives into the dark heart of rural Florida, where a young man's life was upended by a tragic miscarriage of justice."Captivating, enraging, and all too true." —Bob Kolker, New York Times bestselling author of Hidden Valley Road"Bone Valley is a work of rare moral clarity and deep compassion." ―Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man WalkingIn 1987, Leo Schofield was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, Michelle. Always insistent on his innocence, he was poorly served by his legal defense: the investigation was sloppy, the case flimsy, and numerous pieces of evidence were ignored. He was sentenced to life in prison. Over thirty years later, Gilbert King is tipped off to Leo's case and is astonished by what he found: layers...

Shelley

Shelley

Richard Holmes

Biography

Shelley: The Pursuit is the book with which Richard Holmes—the finest literary biographer of our day—made his name. Dispensing with the long-established Victorian picture of Shelley as a blandly ethereal character, Holmes projects a startling image of “a darker and more earthly, crueler and more capable figure.” Expelled from college, disowned by his aristocratic father, driven from England, Shelley led a life marked from its beginning to its early end by a violent rejection of society; he embraced rebellion and disgrace without thought of the cost to himself or to others. Here we have the real Shelley—radical agitator, atheist, apostle of free love, but above all a brilliant and uncompromising poetic innovator, whose life and work have proved an essential inspiration to poets as varied as W.B. Yeats and Allen Ginsberg.

He embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage through the theological cradle of Christianity, exploring one of the biggest stories of our time: the collapse of religion in the world that it created. But one day another family joins and Aaron makes a new Friend, Bryson...but soon both Aaron and Bryson discover they were meant to be more than just friends......Ward's Laws has appeared on the iTunes Humour genre charts 11 times. It has appeared on charts in Australia, USA.Ward’s Laws is a silly thing I started on Facebook. When I first opened my account I did what every other forty-something year old does, I froze. I didn’t know what to write.I started posting the usual stuff. I talked about my day, my dog, my bathroom habits and said LOL a lot, but that just wasn’t me. I wanted to do something more. I wanted to contribute to the good of the world (are you believing any of this yet?) After reinventing myself I started posting my observations of the world around me in the form of Ward’s Laws.I now wrote about funny observations I made about everyday life. Silly word plays as well as things we see and do all the time but never question. As the number of new posts grew, my friends on the site started telling me that I needed to publish these laws as a book. At first I was flattered, but their constant encouragement, LOL's, and retweets gave me the fortitude to create the book you are about to read. If your still not sure, download the free sample and see if my laws make you laugh.

Kipling and War

Kipling and War

Andrew Lycett

Biography / Nonfiction / History

Although Rudyard Kipling never fought, he was one of Britiain's foremost observers of and commentators on war. Through his writing on the harsh realities of life as a private and accounts of feats of courage and comradeship during the frontier wars in India, 19th century British campaigns in Sudan, the Boer Wars and the First World War, he became the poet of the common soldier. Although he wrote propaganda for the government in the Boer and First World Wars, Kipling was also acerbic in his criticism of military incompetence, deeply compassionate towards the victims of war and despairing of the senseless bloodshed that he witnessed. Through his writing, the voices of countless soldiers and the guns of many battles echo through the years and place Kipling firmly firmly among the leading practitioners of 19th and 20th century war literature.

Most science fiction novels are plot driven. While the Parallel Conspiracy’s plot is very intense and a seat-of-your-pants adventure, it’s really the characters that grip you the most as they work their way through the mystery they have to solve. Although there is lots of friction and a romantic triangle develops between the main characters, they ultimately grow as individuals and as a group from the experience. It's also a unique blend of mystery, adventure and romance all rolled into a high tech science fiction novel. I think this combination also sets it apart from other scifi thrillers you'll readQ: Speaking of characters, you have some very strong female lead characters in the book. Did you find that aspect a challenge to write. A: While I suppose it’s easier for a man to write male characters and the opposite goes for women authors, I didn’t really focus on gender differences that much. I did of course have some. You have too. What I concentrated on more though was the unique emotional state of each character; how they would grow through the intense, life and death experiences they continue to be pushed into throughout the novel. Q: You used humor throughout the book. Can you explain its role in the novel?A: The novel is by no means a comedy, but I did slip funny things in from time to time. My main male character is a computer programmer who is stepped on continuously by his wife, boss and co-workers. To get somewhat of a feeling of this ridicule, earlier scenes with him are written in a more humorous manner. As the story progresses and the character changes, my treatment of him does too. He is no longer to be laughed at but respected instead. There is of course a risk that the reader will think it’s not an intense action thriller when they start reading the novel, but it was a deliberate tactic that I used. Hopefully it works
