DESCENDANT OF WAR
BOOK ONE
PROLOGUE
HISTORY BECOMES LEGEND
One thousand years ago, a horrific war against the alien Sa’Nerran Empire resulted in the annihilation of Earth and the deaths of billions. Belligerent and cruel, the waspish hisses of the Sa’Nerra haunted the dreams of all who faced them in battle. The aliens were cunning too. By studying the neural communications implants that all humans had fitted at birth, the Sa’Nerra found a way to twist people’s minds. Fleet Captains turned against their own crews, entire ships went rogue, and colonies were brainwashed into servitude or slaughtered by the million. A vast interstellar society was wiped out in a matter of years, Earth itself was destroyed, and humanity was on the brink of extinction. Yet the war was ultimately won, thanks to the actions of a ruthless and unpitying group of soldiers.
Known as the Omega Taskforce, and led by Captain Lucas Sterling, these unique men and women took the fight back to the Sa’Nerra, using tactics that many considered immoral, and even abhorrent. Sterling and his officers destroyed the alien fleet and sterilized the alien home-world using cobalt-salted nuclear torpedoes. Fifty billion Sa’Nerra died in the fires and radioactive dust clouds that followed the bombardment of their world. Yet the Sa’Nerra were not eradicated. Fifteen ships escaped, surging through ancient interstellar apertures into unknown regions of the galaxy, never to be seen again.
With the Sa’Nerra gone, humanity survived and created a new home on the last remaining inhabited planet - the former colony world called Bastion, dozens of light years from a war-ravaged solar system. The actions of Sterling and his fellow Omega officers were immortalized in texts written by a sentient AI known as One – the only living survivor of those times. Eventually, the Sa’Nerra were all but forgotten; reduced to monsters in stories told to children to keep them fearful of venturing out alone at night. History eventually became legend.
In time, humanity recovered, rebuilt and again ventured even deeper into the stars, discovering five new alien species. Some were aggressive, such as the proud and stubborn Quarr, while others were diplomatic, such as the pious De’Vaught. Wars were fought, won and lost on all sides, yet unlike the hateful Sa’Nerra, these races all shared some common ground. Eventually, a fractious peace was brokered between the six realms, and boundaries were established between their realms.
To facilitate trade and maintain diplomatic relations between the races, a unique twenty-kilometre-long space station was constructed in neutral territory, where the boundaries of all six realms intersected. Named Concord Station by the humans who built it, the outpost went by a different name to those unlucky enough to be stationed there - The Abyss. While noble in purpose, Concord quickly became a magnet for the worst elements of society from each species. It was a haven for smugglers, dealers, traffickers, crimelords, corrupt tycoons, runaways and those with simply nowhere else to go. And while it was a thriving trade hub, vice was its principal industry.
